I remember Father’s Day 2017 like it was yesterday, evidence of how time flies! Lucas had just been born on 5/5/17. He’s now one year old, he can walk, he’s trying to talk, and he’s officially my little buddy. He’s sad when I leave in the morning, he’s happy to see me when I get home, and he clings to me for dear life whenever we go someplace. This Father’s day reminds me that I’m blessed to have 3 happy and healthy boys who all have different, but equally special relationships with me. I’m excited for another summer with additional time together!
In fact, more than Memorial Day, it’s Father’s Day that marks the start of summer for me. It usually takes the kids getting out of school, Momo and Papa’s pool opening up and the first quoits of the season to be thrown for me to really get in the summer spirit. I’m not a beach guy. And I grille all year round. So these typical summer activities don’t move the needle for me. It really is the family activities that pick up that really make summer what it is for me.
I appreciate having daylight when I get home from work so we can be outside together. I enjoy having my mini garden in full vegetable production for fresh BLTs, salads and eating dinner outside on the porch. And the organized sports schedule takes a breather for our own outdoor fun and little adventures. This weekend, Father’s Day, to me feels like the start it all!
With all these things, I get to be Dad. It’s the best job in the world. And I’m lucky to still have my father, my mentor and my friend to share it with too. Because while I look forward to these family moments with my boys this summer, I’m pretty sure he does too.
So to all the Dads out there, new dads, old dads, granddads, dads-in-law, stepdads, uncles and friends that take on the roles of dads…Happy Father’s Day. I hope you all take the time to say “thanks,” to those who have made a difference in YOUR life, whether you get to do that face to face, via phone call or by prayer.
Here’s to summer!
